Simple Plan is one of Canada's most successful punk-pop acts, featuring a lineup comprised

of former high school pals Pierre Bouvier, Jeff Stinco, David Desrosiers, Sebastien Lefebvre and Chuck Comeau. Originally founded in 1999, the multi-award winning band toured around Canada gaining popularity by connecting with their listeners on more than just a superficial level. Pierre Bouvier states “We know what kids go through; because we've been through that …We want kids to feel like we're talking about them and for them”. This relationship has led Simple Plan to emerge as one of the preeminent Pop Punk bands in the world. They landed show dates with the annual Vans Warped Tour in 2001 as well as spots with Toronto's Snow Jam. By now, Simple Plan had a spunky, energetic punk sound, textured like Cheap Trick, but raw like Pennywise.

UBC Asian Studies 50th Anniversary Gala

Come join us as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the UBC Department of Asian Studies! Since our founding in 1961 the Department has been at the forefront of teaching and research about Asia in North America. Over the years our department has expanded to offer many different Asian culture, literature and history classes as well as adding on several new languages to our already extensive list.

This night is an opportunity to look back and see how much this department has developed, as well as to connect with alumni, staff and faculty, and current students. Come enjoy light snacks and champagne at the reception, followed by a delicious dinner buffet with wine, and a performance by the UBC Persian Music Ensemble to celebrate the launch of the Department’s new Persian Language and Iranian Studies Initiative.

BC Student Send-off and BC Day 2011

July 31, 2011 – The Canadian Alumni Network and the BC International Trade and Investment Office hosted the 4^th BC Student Send-off while celebrating BC Day 2011 at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. The BC Alumni Reps and fellow alumni were on hand to do a presentation, which included sharing their own experiences to the 70 new students heading off to UBC, SFU and UVic, showing a video on the BC Alumni activities in Beijing, and giving out some prizes, like a Nokia X7-00 smartphone that went to one very lucky incoming SFU student, that was generously contributed by SFU Alumni Relations and SFU President Andrew Petter. For the first time, the event saw a large number of current UBC students participate in this event providing insight to life during their first years of university. A networking event was hosted afterwards in the Canadian Club with pizza, a common staple for university students, where alumni, students, and their parents were able to share some one-on-one time.

Thanks to all the alumni volunteers, reps and current students, who came out to help with the annual event from SFU, UBC and UVic. Special thanks to Kevin Tsui and his team at the BC Trade and Investment Office for sponsoring and supporting this annual event, and the Canadian Embassy in Beijing for their continued support, especially to Gary Lee, who is also a proud UBC Alumni!

Many Alumni in Motion to Inspire and Make a Difference in China

April 14, 2011 (Beijing) – A representative group of the Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) were among the 500 participants and special guests that attended a special ceremony at the Badaling section of the Great Wall on Tuesday April 12th, commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen’s “Man in Motion World Tour”, which he started on March 21, 1985 and took him over 40,000 kilometers and through 34 countries in 26 months, to raise awareness of the potential of people with a disability, raising $26 million for spinal cord injury (SCI) research and quality of life programs. More importantly was the collective shift in consciousness in the belief of the potential of people with disabilities when barriers are removed.

Exactly twenty five years to the date of the historic Man In Motion’s original visit to the Great Wall of China, the Difference Maker Champions Symbolic Relay was organized to connect, inspire and challenge young people and serve as a reminder of the important role the next generation will play in accelerating progress toward a more healthy, sustainable and inclusive world.

“The Great Wall of China played a significant role in the overall success of the original Man In Motion World Tour and was the beginning of a new conversation with China about the potential of people with a disability,” said Rick Hansen, President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. “Twenty five years later, it is an honour to be connecting young people at such a symbolic location – the Great Wall of China – and seeing the energy and enthusiasm from the hundreds of students who came out to support my vision of a healthy and inclusive world. The four difference makers who participated today are representative of the millions of kids around the world who are making a difference now.”

The Rick Hansen Difference Maker medal was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint, which is the same medal that will be passed among 7,000 difference makers during the 9 month cross-Canada 25th Anniversary Relay that begins in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador, on August 24th, 2011.

Mr. Mark Rowswell – a popular celebrity in China known as “Dashan,” and University of Toronto alumni – hosted the event on the Great Wall that the Ambassador of Canada to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. David Mulroney attended, along with the young children of Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), a leading international school in Asia. The relay was the first of a number of activities that Rick participated in while in China.

Rick reflected on the achievements of the 3-day visit to Beijing and the future before presenting a surprise award to Richard Liu, Founder of the Canadian Alumni Network and UBC Alumni representative in Beijing, recognizing his contribution as a difference maker to the Rick Hansen Man in Motion World Tour 25th Anniversary. Richard, who was completely beside himself, made the closing remarks with a presentation declaring, “On behalf of 3000 alumni in China and our 26 Alumni Representatives, the end is really just the beginning for us in China tonight, that Mr. Rick Hansen, as a fellow UBC Alumni, the Honourary Co-Chair of the Canadian Alumni Network, who has made a difference by building a stronger relationship for many in Canada and China in education.” The formalities closed by recognizing long-time founding Alumni Representative who will be returning to Canada this summer, Mr. Peter Forster of the University of Victoria, for a “Lifetime Achievement” award that was presented by Mr. Rick Hansen.

Special thanks to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, the BC International Trade and Investment Office, and the Canadian Alumni Network for supporting and organizing the reception that provided a venue for Rick and his team to meet and interact with the many difference makers in the Canadian Alumni Community in Beijing.

Over the next 11 days, Rick visited Beijing, Shanghai, Shantou and Hong Kong to engage youth, recognize Chinese difference makers in the areas of SCI research for a cure and accessibility, and further partnerships in the areas of research and accessibility through a series of collaborative agreements.

The event was part of the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary International Program, an initiative to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s “Man in Motion World Tour” - which took him over 40,000 kilometers and through 34 countries in 26 months to raise awareness of the potential of people with a disability.

Exactly twenty five years to the date of his original visit to the Great Wall of China, a symbolic relay was held to connect, engage and inspire young people and serve as a reminder of the important role the next generation will play in accelerating progress toward a more healthy, sustainable and inclusive world. Four students from the Western Academy of Beijing - which has representation from 55 countries - were selected to participate in the symbolic relay. Karoline Aaen (age 16), Herman Chau (age 16), Thomson Chen (age 16) and Carolina Minton-Frias (age 11) were identified as “difference makers,” having demonstrated leadership among their peers and in their community.

As part of the symbolic relay today, Hansen passed the same Rick Hansen Difference Maker medal that was unveiled at the Rick Hansen Senior secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, last week, to Carolina Minton-Frias. It is the same medal that will be passed among 7,000 difference makers during the 9 month cross-Canada 25th Anniversary Relay that begins in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador, on August 24th, 2011.

“I’m honoured, proud and very excited,” said Carolina Minton-Frias, who was selected for her leadership including fundraising efforts for students in need and the donation of her hair to the Locks of Love Foundation which makes wigs for children with cancer. “This is a once in a lifetime chance that inspires me to do more – and I am going to do more.”

25th Anniversary Rick Hansen Man in Motion World Tour

Twenty-five years ago, during the Man In Motion World Tour, Rick Hansen wheeled through the streets of China to raise awareness of spinal cord injury (SCI) and to create a more accessible world for everyone. Thousands of Chinese people came out to witness his journey and embrace his mission. They believed in his dream and warmly recognized and celebrated his great accomplishments.

The overwhelming support from China and its people marked a turning point in the Tour. Images of Rick’s inspirational journey through China captivated people from around the world and in Canada, who began to follow Rick’s journey with great interest. This set the stage for an unprecedented global engagement with the rest of the Tour.

After the Tour, Rick established the Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF) to continue his quest for an accessible and inclusive society and a cure for SCI. Twenty years later, extraordinary progress has been made in the areas of SCI research and accessibility.

In April 2011, Rick Hansen will be back in China to thank the country and its people for the pivotal role they played in raising awareness of the original Tour and to celebrate Chinese difference makers who have made a significant impact in finding a cure for SCI and in making the world more accessible.

The 25th Anniversary celebration of Rick’s original tour through China will provide an opportunity to engage Chinese citizens, society and government.

• For Chinese citizens, Rick’s story is proof that anything is possible and anyone can make a positive contribution to society. This confidence and optimism will give people the power to accomplish extraordinary things and to become difference makers.

Francophonie celebrations in China kick off this week. Canada’s network in China and the Québec Offices are participating in a full program of activities including concerts, conferences and films. All staff are encouraged to participate in events open to the public.

From March 4 to 19, Alex Nevsky and his musicians will tour 11 cities and perform 12 concerts. In 2010, Alex Nevsky, an up and coming musician from Montreal released his first album, “De lune à l’aube”. Nevsky’s musical style is an eclectic mix, featuring classic rhythms with his own unique twist. The singer-songwriter is inspired by sharing emotion through the poetry of music. Nevsky’s cross-China tour aims to captivate and awaken something in all of his audiences.

Invited by the Quebec Offices in China, the renowned professor Alain-G. Gagnon will be in Beijing and Shanghai from March 21 to 25 to give conferences in the local universities on the following topics: The first topic will focus on the arrangement of the diversity in Quebec and the place of Quebec within the Canadian federation (Imagining Diversity, Thinking a Culture of Togetherness). The second topic is about the linguistic regulations: The linguistic diversity in the context of pluralism.

Two fascinating films “Dans le ventre du Moulin” and “L’enfant prodige” will be screened in cities throughout China.

Le réseau du Canada en Chine et les bureaux du Québec participent à un programme complet d’activités comprenant des concerts, des conférences et des films.
